IPv6 E-mail

Written by Ken Rutkowski, on 10-06-2008 12:16

The Internet address space available under the current protocol, IPv4, will run out real soon, 2011, and the only long term solution is to transition to IPv6 which has sufficient address capacity to give every grain of sand on the planet its own unique Internet address, or something like that.

Only 16% of the total IPv4 address space remained unallocated in early 2008, this situation is critical for the future of the Internet economy because all new users connecting to the Internet, and all businesses that require IP addresses for their growth, will be affected by the change from the current status of ready availability of unallocated IPv4 addresses.

IPv6 extra blocks = infinite
Hi Ken. Some geekdom... If you say IPv4 has 4 blocks, then IPv6 will have 12 extra blocks. Each block is 8 bits. IPv4 has 32 bits. IPv6 will have 128 bits. This is not billion billion billion, but much much more. We could say it's "close to infinite" :-) The notation to IPv6 will be the same as MAC Addresses (network cards physical addresses), with a notation like this: 2001:0db8:85a3:08d3:1319:8a2e: 0370:7334 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ IPv6). Can be shortened if possible (zeroes disappears).
